‘re-live’ tells the powerful story of a woman overcoming the trauma of a sexual assault and how she learns to heal herself and reclaim her freedom.
Starring Kassius Nelson from Edgar Wright’s ‘Last Night in Soho’, Reggie Yates' ‘Pirates’ and Neil Gaiman's new series, ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ for HBO Max; and written & directed by Lotus Hannon, produced by Kay Loxley and executive produced by BFI Vision Awarded producer and Screen Star of Tomorrow, Chi Thai.
Synopsis:
're-live' is a heroine’s journey honouring how a young woman, Amy, processes the dissociation and survival of a sexual assault that occurred whilst she was out running. Fragile and fragmented, Amy is trapped. Her gritted determination to push past the trauma following the assault, takes Amy step by step, closer to healing and reclaiming herself so she can live and run again.
Director’s Statement:
"I wanted to explore the powerful psychological phenomenon of dissociation activated within the ‘Fight, Flight, Freeze or Fake Response’. The physiological instinct to freeze and seem dead protects against dangerous predators, whilst dissociation enables the brain to cope with trauma by 'leaving' the body."
"This ‘out-of-body’ feeling, as if the survivor becomes a spectator of her own situation is very common in survivors of sexual assault, and yet I have never seen this portrayed on screen, this is what drove me to create 're-live'."
"Freezing-dissociation can cause survivors to appear cut off from emotion, as if she was indifferent to what happened to her. This little understood survival response has been misinterpreted for decades as a “victim not doing enough to fight back”. In reality, women instinctively utilise a highly effective survival defence reflex. I hope re-live will shine a light on the misunderstood and understated heroism of rape survivors.
